Jim Martin for Senate
Democrat - Georgia
No race results: Due to Georgia's unique election rules, which require a victor to have "50+1"% of the votes, Jim Martin will likely be in a runoff election against Sen. Saxby Chambliss on December 2.
Democrat - Challenger

Jim Martin (D-GA), running for Senate from Georgia, has been a long shot candidate since the beginning of his race, but recent polls show him quickly closing the gap - within six points - on incumbent Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R).
On August 5, ex-state representative Martin finally emerged victorious from a hard-fought primary against DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones. Martin overwhelmed Jones 60-40% in a primary runoff, and now faces incumbent Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) in the general election.
Chambliss ran a highly controversial campaign in 2002 to upset Sen. Max Cleland (D), and now faces declining approval ratings - only 37% of likely voters think he’s doing a good or excellent job. He has a hawkish voting record, scoring 0% on every CLW voting scorecard since his election in 2002. Chambliss has been widely favored for re-election, but two August polls – from Rasmussen and the Mellman group – found him just six points ahead of Martin, a five point improvement for Martin since July.
Martin is a Georgia native with a long history in his state's politics. After earning a bachelor's degree and two law degrees from the University of Georgia and serving for two years in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam, Martin began his career in Georgia state government. He served for 18 years in the state legislature, and became commissioner of Human Resources just after 9/11. Martin lost his bid as Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in 2006.
Martin support the Kissinger-Shultz-Nunn-Perry vision of moving toward a world free of nuclear weapons and would vote to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Martin believes we cannot continue the Bush Administration's failed policy in Iraq and supports withdrawing U.S. forces.
This Georgia Senate seat, previously assumed a Republican victory, now looks within reach of Jim Martin.
